Different Types of Bacterial Culture Media

According to the composition of the different types of  bacterial culture meida. It can be divided into synthetic media, natural media and semi synthetic media. So what is synthetic, natural, semi-synthetic media in microbiology? What are the differences? Here below are the concepts and the examples of synthetic, natural, semi-synthetic media in microbiology.

(1)Synthetic culture media. The components of the synthetic culture media are all known chemicals. The chemical composition of this media is clear, the composition is accurate, the repeatability is strong, but the price is expensive, and the growth of microorganisms in synthetic culture media is slow. Such as Gao's No.1 synthetic media and Chashi(Czapek) media, etc.

(2)Natural culture media. It is made of natural substances, such as steamed potato and common beef soup. The former is used to cultivate mold and the latter is used to cultivate bacteria. The chemical composition of this kind of culture media is very unsteady and difficult to determine, but it is easy to prepare, rich in nutrition and good in culture effect, so it is often used.

(3)Semisynthetic culture media. On the basis of natural organic matter, some inorganic salts of known ingredients or some natural ingredients, such as potato glucose agar media for mould culture, should be added properly. This kind of media can more effectively meet the needs of microorganisms for nutrients

Different types of bacterial culture media can be divided into four types according to the types of microorganisms: bacterial culture media, actinomycete culture media, yeast culture media and mould culture media.

(1) The commonly used bacterial culture media are nutrient broth and nutrient agar.

(2) The commonly used culture media of actinomycetes is Gaoshi 1.

(3) The commonly used yeast culture media includes potato sucrose culture media and malt juice culture media.

(4) The commonly used mold culture media are potato sucrose culture media, bean sprout juice sucrose (or glucose, glucose is more expensive) agar culture media and chasser culture media.
